This is all about the pigs.

Last year was the "Swine Flu". Nobody in Honduras would get to close pigs or pork for fear of Gripe Porcina (Swine Flu). So, a lot of pig farms went out of business. We held on. If anything, we expanded like we've never done before. The risk paid off. At the end of the year people were clamouring for pigs because it was Christmas, and swine flu or not, it was tamale time. Problem was, there were few pigs to be found. So, we made some pretty good trades from pigs to cattle.

Right now the pigs are in even shorter supply but we have about 20 that we are feeding out for slaughter. The company we traded pigs and cattle with called Sunday and said they needed some more pigs to fulfill their contract to the butcher shops. We settled on a price and were ready to sell.

As things go here, nothing is that easy. The man, as in one single hombre, that slaughters pigs for the meat company went on strike Sunday. They did not buy the pigs because they could not process them. Jose and I were trying to picture a single man picketing in front of the meat company with a sign stating that he would not butcher without a raise (or something like that). Anyway, the pigs breathed a sigh of relief and are happily chowing and growing in our lot.
